Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to protect the historic Diyarbakır City Walls, one of the city’s most important landmarks, and prevent environmental pollution as part of its “I Love Amed, I Don’t Litter” campaign. Teams established under the Department of Environmental Protection and Control are carrying out intensive cleaning work on site without damaging the historic structure.

Every Part of the Walls Is Being Meticulously Cleaned

As part of the planned operations, teams working simultaneously at different points along the walls are removing waste that has accumulated around their base and caused visual pollution. Sediment and waste accumulated in passageways and galleries inside the walls are being carefully removed, while particular care is also being taken to address pollution that has built up over time on the upper sections.

The work is being carried out without damaging the fabric of the historic walls, with the aim of providing a cleaner environment for local and international visitors while safeguarding the city’s historic heritage.

Work Carried Out as Part of the Campaign

Providing information about the work, Mehmet Baran, Head of the Solid Waste Unit within the Department of Environmental Protection and Control, said the cleaning operations were being carried out as part of the “I Love Amed, I Don’t Litter” campaign.

Baran said they were conducting cleaning work in the wall galleries and on the upper sections of the wall, which form one of the most important parts of Diyarbakır’s historic fabric. He added that they were working resolutely to keep not only the streets of the Sur district and historic sites clean, but also the inner and upper sections of the walls and their galleries.

‘We Will Keep Our Walls Clean 24/7’

Calling on residents to show greater sensitivity towards the protection of historic sites, Baran said:

“We have carried out cleaning activities in the galleries and on the upper sections of the walls, which are among the most important elements of Diyarbakır’s historic fabric. The cleanliness of our walls, which are at the heart of Diyarbakır, the streets of the Sur district and our historic sites should be given the same importance as the cleanliness of the walls themselves, including their galleries, upper sections and interiors. We are carrying out our cleaning operations with determination in line with this approach. We ask our residents to be more sensitive, particularly towards historic sites, and not to litter these areas. We will keep our walls clean 24/7, both for our city and for local and international visitors coming from outside the city.”

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality will continue to carry out periodic cleaning and maintenance work at historic and cultural sites across the city.
