DBŞT Opens Theatre Season with Moraşîn

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre (DBŞT) has opened its October theatre programme with Moraşîn. The production, performed by a cast of around 50 actors and dancers, drew strong interest from audiences.

Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre (DBŞT) opened its new theatre season with Moraşîn. Staged at Çand Amed Culture and Congress Centre, the performance brought together a large audience of theatre-goers.

Written and directed by Ghotbedin Sadeghi, Moraşîn drew attention with its stage design, music and ritual-based narrative. The performances by the actors and dancers were met with applause throughout the show.

A cast of 50 takes to the stage

Performed by a cast of around 50 actors and dancers, the play is a dramatic adaptation inspired by the story of “Young Xelil” found in Kurdish epics.

The play tells the story of Moraşîn, who is separated from her fiancé Genco because of war and poverty and sets out on a journey to reunite with the man she loves. Together with 40 women, Moraşîn disguises herself as a man and embarks on a long and arduous journey.

The character’s transformation throughout her journey is conveyed on stage through ancient rituals and symbolic storytelling. The play brings together themes of love, sacrifice, resistance and mythology.

Following the performance, Head of the Department of Culture, Arts and Social Affairs Zeynap Yaş came on stage and shook hands with the cast members, thanking them individually for their efforts, particularly the playwright and director Ghotbedin Sadeghi. Yaş also thanked the theatre-goers for their interest and support.

“We are grateful to those who have passed down the legacy of sacred labour to us”

Speaking briefly at the event, Yaş highlighted the importance of keeping art, culture and language alive, saying that art plays an important role in passing the cultural heritage handed down from the past to the present on to new generations.

Following Yaş’s speech, the theatre cast was applauded by the audience.
