Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to preserve the city’s multilingual and multicultural heritage, strengthen languages that remain in everyday use and bring its ancient languages back into public and cultural life. The Language Preservation and Development Unit, operating under the Department of Culture, Arts and Social Affairs, will offer courses at different levels during the new academic term.

Kurmanji and Zazaki Courses from Beginner to Intermediate Level

Kurmanji and Zazaki will be offered at A1, A2 and B1 levels as part of the new term programme. Covering beginner through to intermediate level, the courses are designed to develop participants’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

The courses aim to encourage the learning and wider everyday use of different varieties of Kurdish, while also helping to pass the city’s linguistic heritage on to future generations.

Beginner-Level Sorani Course

Sorani will be offered at A1 level during the new term. The beginner course will introduce participants to the basic structures of Sorani and help them develop essential communication skills.

Armenian and Syriac Among the Languages on Offer

Ancient languages that hold an important place in Diyarbakır’s historical and cultural memory will also form part of the new term programme. Armenian will be offered at A1, A2 and B1 levels, while Syriac will be available at A1 level.

The courses aim to help preserve these ancient languages, encourage more people to learn them and restore their visibility in the life of the city.
