Grape Harvest Event at Zarokistan

Children attending Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality’s Zarokistan childcare centres took part in a grape harvest and traditional grape molasses preparation event, learning about traditional food production through hands-on activities as they helped make walnut-stuffed grape rolls and pestil (traditional fruit leather).

A grape harvest and traditional grape molasses preparation event was organised for children attending the Zarokistan childcare centres run by the Children’s Services Unit under the Department of Social Services. Held in the garden of Bağcılar Zarokistan Nursery and Day Care Centre, the event brought children together with their parents and educators to take part in traditional food production.

The event aimed to give children the opportunity to spend time in nature, understand the importance of organic farming and learn about the region’s cultural heritage. Children worked together to prepare local products, learning through participation with the support of their parents and educators.

Learning Traditional Food Production Through Hands-on Activities

As part of the event, children tried their hand at making walnut-stuffed grape rolls and pestil, gaining first-hand insight into how these traditional local delicacies are prepared. Excited to make the products themselves, they took an active role in the preparation process.

The grape harvest and grape molasses event gave children the opportunity to engage directly with traditional food production. Accompanied by their parents and educators, they not only watched the preparation process but also took part in the activities, learning through practical experience.

Sharing and Solidarity at the Forefront

The event placed particular emphasis on sharing, solidarity and cooperation through collective production. Bringing children, parents and educators together in a shared production process turned the preparation of traditional products into a collective experience.

By working together to make walnut-stuffed grape rolls and pestil, children experienced the importance of shared effort and mutual support. The event therefore helped promote a culture of sharing and solidarity, alongside introducing children to traditional production methods.

Passing Cultural Heritage on to Future Generations

The event aimed to introduce children to the grape harvest tradition, pass cultural heritage on to future generations and keep local production traditions alive. Preparing traditional delicacies provided children with an opportunity to discover the region’s cultural values through hands-on experience.

Bringing together the aims of connecting with nature, producing collectively and discovering cultural heritage, the event offered children an enjoyable learning experience and created colourful scenes.
