Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Parks and Gardens held a sapling-planting event under the slogan “Green Amed with Thousands of Trees” at Mesopotamia City Park, a green and social living space covering a total area of 211,656 square metres, where work is nearing completion. The event attracted considerable interest from Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak, DBB Secretary General Serdar Bakıroğlu, heads of departments, representatives of ecological and civil society organisations, young people and children.

Co-Mayor Bucak: “May they breathe life into us”

Speaking at the event, Co-Mayor Serra Bucak said that more than 20,000 saplings would be planted across the city in the coming months, adding: “I hope that at our next gathering we will come together in numbers many times greater than this, with volunteers, ecology activists, children, young people and university students. Thank you all for your efforts, and may your trees already bring goodness to you all. May they breathe life into us and bring water to our soil.”

As part of the work, 117 saplings of violet and sycamore maple varieties were planted in the first phase. Co-Mayor Bucak and those accompanying her planted the saplings and expressed their hope that green spaces would continue to increase.

Across the project, trees and plants including terebinth, silver maple, magnolia, mulberry, plane, sumac, ornamental apple, ornamental pear and ornamental plum will also be planted.

As part of greening efforts across the city, a total of 20,000 saplings are planned to be planted: 8,000 at Mesopotamia City Park, 5,000 at Naturapark, 3,000 along Gaffar Okan Boulevard, 2,000 in the landscaped areas of the newly built cemetery and 2,000 in various locations across the city.
